JOHN McRAE ALFORD
BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY
(1861-1928)
Geneva County, Alabama
John McRae Alford, of Hartford, Geneva County, Alabama, was born at Carolina, Marion County. S. C, Sept. 21, 1861, son of Paisley and Martha (McRae) Alford who served in the Confederate army at Charleston, S. C. His grandparents were Sion and Catherine[McPhaul) Alford and John and Mary (McInnis) McRae, of Richmond County, N. C.
His education was obtained in the common schools of S. C.. and at the Wallace high school, Wallace, N. C. His earliest vocation was farming, but he has since become largely interested in banking and mercantile interests. He was a member of the House of Representatives of 1907 from Geneva County, Alabama.
Representative was a Democrat: a Presbyterian; a Mason, and a Knight of Pythias. On Feb. 18, 1894, at Claxton, Georgia, he married Lelia, daughter of Mitchel J. and Annie Jane (Beasley) Green. They had the following known children:

- Walter Paisley Alford (may have died Aug 6, 1922, Hartford, Geneva Co., AL
- Nellie Alford
John McRae married two more times, the last marriage was to Sarah Van Meter with whom he had the following known children:
- Frederick Augustus Alford (1888-1962)
- William Van Meter Alford (1916-1981)
“John McRae Alford moved to DeFuniak Springs around 1920, where his younger children by his third wife Sarah (Van Meter) were enrolled in the academy of Palmer College. He died there in 1928. He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and served where he served as an elder.” His descendants live in Bonifay, Florida. John McRae Alford died in 1928 and is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Chipley, Washington County, Florida.
