BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY
(1825-1901)
Lee County, Alabama
James Jackson Abercrombie, lawyer and judge, was born August 28, 1826, near Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia. . He was the son of Gen. Anderson Abercrombie and Sidney (Grimes) Abercrombie At an early age, he removed to Russell County where he attended the country schools. He graduated from Emory College at La Grange, Georgia and from the law department of Harvard university.
James Jackson Abercrombie opened an office at Columbus, Georgia and served for four years as judge of the superior court of Muscogee district.
In 1862, he enlisted as a private in a company of minute men Ross battalion, Co. G., and was advanced for meritorious conduct to the rank of major. After the war, he took up his residence at Opelika and continued the practice of law there until his death. He was a Democrat and a Methodist.
James Jackson Abercrombie married on April 23, 1856, at Tallassee, to Parthenia Eliza Ross, daughter of Isaac II Ross and Narcissa Whitfield (Sledge) Ross. They had the following children:

- Ross Abercrombie, (b. 1858) deceased by 1921
- John Chappell Abercrombie, (b. 1862)) m. Mrs. Dora (Thornton) Jefferson, of Meridian, Miss.
- Wiley Abercrombie, (b. 1864) unmarried.
James Jackson Abercrombie was forced to retire from active work and died after a long illness May 18, 1901. His last residence was Opelika, Lee County, Alabama.
