Captain Sam Dale is my favorite person from the history of the settlement of Alabama. He was a big man and called “Big Sam” by his Indian friends. After his parents died he helped raise his 8 brothers and sisters. He became well-known for his skill as trail blazer and scout, he was wounded at the Battle of Burnt Corn and was involved in the establishment of the State of Alabama and served in its government. He was involved in the famous “Canoe Fight” which has been recounted many times through out Alabama’s history.
