MILTON AMOS
BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY
(1781- 1875)
Escambia County, Alabama
Milton Amos was a physician and surgeon. He was born in 1781, in Maryland, and died in Escambia County, Alabama in 1875. “At an early age, he turned his thoughts to the study of medicine and afterward finished his course in Philadelphia.”He was educated in Maryland and received his medical training at a college in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In 1818 or 1819 he came to south Alabama and located first on Cotton Bluff, about twenty miles below Brooklyn, whence a year later he removed to the latter place. Only two families were living in Brooklyn at the time of his arrival, Mr. Edwin Robinson, a merchant and Mr. Thompson, the owner of the ferry on the Conecuh river. Dr. Amos had an extensive practice in Brooklyn that extended far beyond the town.
In 1835 he changed his location to Belleville, finally removing to Milton, Florida, in 1850, which town was named for him. “Milton had existed as a trading post, a trading center for many years before that time and a risk import-export business was already going on here when Santa Rosa County, Florida was created. Milton’s location at the tidewater terminus of an old Indian and trading trail had given it an early importance in the trade of a large frontier region.”
He married in 1818 or 1819, in Jones County, Ga., to Miss Susan Reese.
They had the following known children:
- Lawrence Nicholas Amos (b. Jan 15, 1814 – d. September 21, 1884) He married Minerva Jernigan. They are buried in Old Brooklyn Methodist Cemetery in Conecuh County, Alabama.
His last residence was Escambia County, Alabama. Dr. Amos died in Escambia county, in 1875, at the advanced age of ninety-four years. He has left a record of honored usefulness.
