Great book for genealogists as a reference book as well—from Alabama’s first historian!
Pickett’s History of Alabama: And Incidentally of Georgia and Mississippi from the Earliest Period
This is a must-read for any student of Alabama history and was the first real history book written in the state by Albert J. Pickett, a man who knew many of the original founders of the state and knew many of the people that he wrote about.
He was very intimate with the events of the earliest days of the state and interviews many people who were eye witnesses.
Albert J. Pickett home in Montgomery has been restored and is the home of the Montgomery historical society
I don’t think I can afford that.
I never felt like Pickets history was very accurate.
Oddly enough, although I have numerous ancestors involved in the founding of the state, only one of them is mentioned in this book. And incidentally, Amazon has it for $30.99 in hardback, $28.95 in paper.
They may have one at your local library.
I have this book and bought one for my son. It is also sold on Amazon. It is a great read and very detailed. When I bought the book about 5 years ago it was around $50. The value has really tripled.
Dr James Pate has published a new annotated version which us available on Amazon. Just got my copy!
