JOHN LEWIS CARTER was born on Sept. 11, 1840 in Pittsylvania County, Va.  He died on April 30, 1907  in Autauga County, Al. He married Francis Olivia Deramus in 1861 in Autauga County, Al.  Francis was born on Feb. 9, 1843 in Autauga county, Al. She died on Oct. 5, 1877.

JOHN was 21 years old and the father of one son when he enlisted on March 1, 1862 in Autaugaville, Al. for two years in the Civil War.  John served as a private in Co. G. (Originally M), 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment.  He was with a group of 100 men from Autauga County who joined the army in the Spring of 1862 and was first shown in the records as present at the Siege of Yorktown, Va. in April 1862 and was present at the Battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg Maryland on Sept. 17, 1862.  He was listed on the Pay Roll at Camp Terrell, Va. on April 1, 1864, on the Payroll dated at Bunker Hill, Va. on Sept. 1, 1864 and on the payroll at Camp Rodes, Va. on Feb. 1, 1865.  He was shown absent on detail (probably hauling supplies) at Stanton, Va.  He served throughout the war as a teamster and was away from the unit much of the time hauling supplies.

According to son-in-law, ORAN BUSH, JOHN hauled medical supplies and had a dog who walked under the wagon to stay in the shade.  John served with the 6th Al. for four years up to the surrender at Appomattox but his name does not appear listed with the 80 men who actually surrendered at Appomattox.  Of the 2,109 men who served with the 6th Al, nearly 400 perished in battle and 243 died of disease.  The 6th Al. fought in most of the major battles of the Civil War including Bloody Lane in Sharpsburg, Cold Harbor and Gettsburg where they suffered frightful losses.
