I have been hooked on genealogy and documenting family history for years now.  In my journey through many historical documents, I am deeply appreciative of the vast amount of research prior ancestors recorded and other family historians have contributed and shared with me.  Now it is time to share this wonderful information with others before it becomes lost.

Many people have often asked me why I started the journey to document family history and I had a difficult time explaining my passion until I saw the movie “Amistad”.  When I heard the words “We are what we were” in the movie, I suddenly realized that these words accurately depicted my enthusiasm.  When we understand our ancestors’ motivations, character and beliefs, we also understand ourselves.

As I followed the paper trails and family histories left by our ancestors, I became particularly engrossed in the stories that reflected their personalities.  I discovered quite a few notable American families originated in Alabama and I will be sharing there biographies on this site in the days to come as well as the people who make up the backbone of America...the "not so notables.I hope you will enjoy their stories as much as I have while researching in Alabama.

Material that is too large to download from the website will be published as an E-book on amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.  Be sure to bookmark BOOKS AVAILABLE page for Updated list of E-books with links.

Ribbon of Love is my fictional novel about the Cottingham family. Ribbon of Love includes little known facts about US history, especially on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The reader is taken back to colonial days when Henry and Mary (Willson) Pattenden flee England, experience a perilous trip across the Atlantic and arrive on the barbaric shores of colonial Virginia only to experience further hardships. Court records dating back to the early 1630's provide historical fodder for the Pattendens' inspiring story and provides the reader with a fictionalized glimpse of life in the primitive days of colonial America with Indians, ducking stools, stocks, illness, massacres, death, loneliness, love, greed and other difficulties. Coming from diverse cultural backgrounds and separated from the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay, the settlers of Ye Kingdom of Accawmacke utilized the distance to avoid laws and restrictions inputed on early colonists and created an almost utopia world revealing a glimpse of America's future.

Check out Elisha Cottingham's (b. 1755- c. 1820) GEDCOM to see if you are a descendant. There is also a  Kindle and Nook book available on Elisha Cottingham with data, notes, records and sources

A cozy mystery THE TATTLETALE PARROT was written by my mother Ellorine Cottingham Morgan and was published four months before she passed away in 2006.  She loved family  history and inspired me to do further research on our family history. Everyone really loved her book.I only wish she was still around to hear the praise.
