First White house of Confederacy today

 

The White House Association of Alabama was a patriotic and historical organization, formed July 1, 1900; and incorporated by the legislature February 5, 1901. It was organized and incorporated "for the purpose of buying, removing, repairing and exercising the rights of ownership in and over a certain building situated on the southwest corner of Lee and Bibb streets, in the city of Montgomery and State of Alabama,

and known as the "First White House of the Confederacy," of establishing a library for the collection and custody of all works of literature and art relating to the Confederate States of America, and also a museum for the preservation of Confederate relics." The incorporators were Mrs. Virginia Clay Clopton, Mrs. J. D. Beale, Mrs. Belle Allen Ross, Mrs. John W. A. Sanford, Mrs. Edward Trimble, Mrs. Vincent M. Elmore, Mrs. Alfred Bethea, Mrs. C. A. Lanier, Mrs. Chappell Cory and Mrs. C. J. Hausman.
