VIET NAM STORY
by
Greg Shelby
As a senior at Auburn University I knew upon graduation I would be drafted immediately. I had no problem serving my country even if it meant going to war, however I wanted to fly. Flying is all I ever wanted to do. My younger brother had joined the Marine Corps. right out of high school so I thought I might follow him.

TELEGRAPH SERVICE IN EARLY ALABAMA
(from History of Alabama and dictionary of Alabama biography, Volume 2
By Thomas McAdory Owen, Marie Bankhead Owen)
The telegraph service is a public utilities for the transmission of messages by means of the Morse, or other code, over electrically operated instruments and wires. The companies in 1919 engaged in commercial telegraphic service in Alabama were the Postal Telegraph-Cable Co. and the Western Union Telegraph Co. Both were interstate companies, having extensive systems of wires and local offices, of which their Alabama properties form but a small part. Besides the facilities of the companies which perform a general commercial service for the public, telegraph lines are maintained by most of the railroad companies for the transmission of messages between their own officials and employees, and for use in dispatching their trains.

MY FATHER'S VIET NAM EXPERIENCE
by
Candice Goodyear
My father James Paul Goodyear along with his four brothers Jerry, Fred, Bobby and Walter served in the Military during the Vietnam War. My father did not share a lot of what happened over there but he did share quite a bit of what happened when he returned.
Once I asked him about his experience over there in Vietnam and he said it was too gruesome to talk about because there was so much blood shed like watching your best friend being decapitated right next to you. He also said that he didn't talk about it because he didn't want to relive it. He said he still had nightmares every once in a while.

WEST FLORIDA ANNEXATION COMMISSION
(transcribed from History of Alabama and dictionary of Alabama biography, Volume 2
By Thomas McAdory Owen, Marie Bankhead Owen)
A commission of three members, to be appointed by the governor, was authorized by the Alabama Legislature, March 4, 1901, to confer with a like commission on the part of Florida, to provide for the annexation to Alabama of that part of Florida known as "West Florida." The commission is empowered to do and perform all acts requisite and necessary to perfect and consummate an agreement of cession, but no such agreement is to be binding until ratified by the Legislature of Alabama and approved by the governor. The territory to be annexed is described as: "All the said territory and jurisdiction now held by the State of Florida in and to and over that portion of the territory of the State of Florida lying and being west of the thread of the Chattahoochee and Appalachlcola rivers and west of a line running due south from the thread of the mouth of the Appalachlcola river, bending west so as to pass between the islands of St. George and St. Vincent, known and called West Florida." In accordance with the authority thus conferred, Gov. Jelks appointed William L. Martin, Richard C. Jones and Samuel Blackwell as commissioners. So far as known, however, the commissioners never qualified nor organized, and Mr. Martin and Mr. Jones are now (1916) deceased.
