WILLIAM YANCEY ADAMS
BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY
(1848-1925)
Blount County, Alabama
William Yancey Adams, a teacher, was born at Gum Springs, Blount County the son of Barclay M. Adams and Martha (Musgrove) Adam. His father, born in Edgefield, S. C, came to Blount County, in 1846 and served in 1st Alabama infantry regiment, C. S. Army. William was the grandson of Jack Adams and Elizabeth (Nicholson) Adams, of Edgefield, S. C, and of William Henry Musgrove and Sallie (Fowler) Musgrove, the former a native of Georgia who served several times in that state's legislature. He was a colonel in the Creek war, captain Co. C, 29th Alabama infantry regiment, C. S. Army, and a Baptist minister. He died at Mobile, Alabama. William Y. Adams was the great-grandson of Rev. John Fowler, a cousin of William Lowndes Yancey.

THOMAS ADAMS
BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

Talladega and Clay County, Alabama
Thomas Adams was a farmer, merchant, and member of the constitutional convention of 1867 He was born in Edgefield District, S. C. where he spent his youth. He received a limited education, removed to Coweta County, Ga., where he resided for eleven years, then located in Randolph County, about 1850.
After three years, he moved to Talladega County, and in 1865 to Clay County, Alabama.

Morgan County, Alabama
Elder Joseph Lane was another one of the early preachers of the Muscle Shoals Baptist Association. He came from North Carolina and settled in Morgan county, Alabama, near Trinity about 1820. He was a member of Spring Hill Church, near Decatur, and was ordained in that church by Elders J. L. Townes, Henry W. Hodges and Jeremiah Burns, in November, 1828. Elder James Edens, of Mt. Pisgah Church, was ordained at the same time and by the same presbytery.
Elder Lane was pastor of Spring Hill Church for a while. He also preached to Enon and in 1829, he was pastor of Hopewell Church. He was pastor of Courtland Church in 1834. He left Alabama for Mississippi in 1836.

Madison and Lawrence County, Alabama and Georgia
Elder Henry W. Hodges came to Alabama about 1818 or 1819 and settled on Town Creek, near the bridge on the Tuscumbia and Courtland road. This was near the Carmel Church, of which he was a member, and perhaps a constituent member. The Morgan Baptist Association reports: "One of the oldest churches in Morgan County, Hopewell was organized on the first Saturday in December 1824. It is mentioned in Hosea Holcombe's 1840 A History of the Rise and Progress of the Baptists of Alabama. The presbytery was composed of Elders John Birdwell, Stephen Penn, Walden, and Featherstone. Charter members were Barkley Ballard, Polly Ballard, William Johnson, Sarah McDowell, Martha Rodgers, James Simmons, Stacy Simmons, Elizabeth Simmons, Polly Simmons, Solomon Simmons, Mary Simmons, Nicholas Gillentine Sr., Jane Gillentine, Richard L. Gillentine Jr., Martha Gillentine. Annie Gillentine, Gideon Spalden, and Nancy Spalden." The first deacon was Nicholas Gilentine and the first clerk was William Johnson. The first recorded pastor was Henry W. Hodges in 1827.
